lowb5 I plan to do what all of you are planning. The drive to "have it now" is overwhelming. And if not kept in check will cause you to make BAD mistakes, both in moneys and quality. MY advice is slow down And take a deep breath. What you are about to undertake will take a long time.... maybe years to complete If your DIY savy, A lot sooner if you have pockets full of cash.
As for me I am lucky in my location of 40 acers littered with stone and boulders, as well as hundreds of ceder trees. Plus the bed rock foundation is at the surface of the castle location. As a plus I have no restrictions and will not have to go through a formal building inspection process. Altho i will have Inspectors out to check off the work as a mater of record for If I decide to sell one day.
To each of us we have a different idea of what our castle will look like . And certainly with the energy prices to heat and cool , Modern tech will Have to be implemented, As for the actual size, I cant see building a 10,000 sq ft castle the primitive way It would literly KILL you to heat and cool it at comfortable levels... IF it were even possable to do so. There are other items that I will omit such as a mote Because of mosquitos. Wooden conical roofs because of storm dammage , repairs and up keep. Dungen , because I dont want the expence of blasting the rock out and fracturing the foundation strata.
So with these things omitted , Do I still have a castle ? Well, Thats what I'll call it anyway. My Sq footage will be in the
5000 + sq ft area, and only comprising 1 floor with a celing hight of 12 foot through out the main floor. with 2- 30 foot circular , 2 story towers on each end. The whole main floor will represent a slightly curved arch from the front view and arching to incompus and join the back stone wall as a courtyard surround The roofs will be slightly domed water proofed ,insulated, reinforced concrete with sod on top .
The first expense is the foundation and slab. This will be my one of 2 contracted out expence, ( the 2nd being the poured roof) I'll rough in all the utilities before hand and radiant floor heating tubes. Then its all a matter of time. buying Bags of cement collecting rocks , cutting timbers . Buying materails as needed and working on weekends till its done . But when its done It will stand up to a tornado. I may loose windows , But the castle will be their and PAID FOR>!!! Best of luck to all !
